A Goan Getaway

18 Comments on A Goan Getaway

Goa is one of the most happening places in India. It is a perfect getaway whether you want to just chill for a long weekend with friends, go on a honeymoon or just relax. It’s known for the beautiful beaches, churches, forts and of course the yummy food.

Due to it’s proximity to our city Mumbai, we have visited Goa several times over the years. Each year we try to explore a new part of Goa.

Last year we celebrated our birthday in Goa and we spent it in one of the popular tourist spots known as Calangute , as we wanted to go to few of the popular restaurants which were close by.We realized later that it was the holiday season so it was more crowded than usual.

If you enjoy partying and don’t mind crowds then you can head to the popular beaches like Calangute, Baga, Candolim,Anjuna and Vagator. If you prefer peaceful beaches with less crowds then head to the beaches in South Goa like Palolem, Majorda, Agonda etc.

Below you will find reviews of few restaurants / places we visited last year. These reviews are based on our personal experiences.

Souza Lobo:

This was our first visit to the restaurant as we had so much about it.This place has a very good ambiance as it facing the beach. We went here for lunch and the food we ordered was good but we have had better sea food. The crumb fried king fish was fried well but it was lacking salt. The brownie was a bit hard though it was tasty with the ice-cream. The service was good and quantity of food was also apt for the price.

Curry Leaf:

This is a nice restaurant. We were staying at Hotel Calangute towers and this restaurant is just below so had gone here for dinner. The food is good in quantity and taste and not too spicy. The staff is also helpful in suggesting dishes. Also the ambiance was nice and classy. To be honest it was more budget friendly than the beach shacks.

Kenny’s The Breakfast Place:

We discovered this place on Zomato while searching for good breakfast places near our hotel. And I must say we were not disappointed. This restaurant was just a 2 min walk from our hotel. Surprisingly we were the only ones and I thought it was closed for service. The owner Kenny was sitting outside and upon inquiry he said it was open. Thank God as we were very hungry.
We ordered the chicken English breakfast and it did take about 15-20 mins to prepare but it was worth the wait. The breakfast comprised of fried eggs, chicken sausages, mushrooms, beans, two slices of toast and a tea. It was really yummy and quite filling also reasonably priced. The owner Kenny and his wife Edna seemed like warm people who prepare the meal themselves with great care.I would definitely recommend this place to others.

St. Anthony Restaurant and Bar:

This is a totally chilled out place right near the beach front .You can sit here for hours and just enjoy yourself. Though it was raining we just sat and enjoyed the food and chilled beer while listening to nice music and with view of the beach. The service was pretty quick although it was crowded which I really appreciated.
The food was good in quantity and tasty. We had ordered masala calamari which was good
in quantity but a little spicy for us. But if you inform the waiter he can make the food less spicy. The garlic cheese bread and peri-peri beef was also yummy. In all loved the place and would definitely come back here.

St.Alex Church:

We visited this church and it is one of the beautiful churches of Goa. Love the architecture and ambiance is very peaceful.

Baga Beach:

This is a nice beach , less crowded compared to Calangute beach. There are two popular shacks Brittos and St. Anthonys where one can just sit and chill and enjoy the view.
It is popular among tourists for water sports and night life.

Calangute Beach

This beach has lovely views but sometimes it gets a little too crowded .The famous restaurant Souza Lobo is located on this beach. It is also  popular among tourists for water sports and night life.

Thank you for reading. If you haven’t been to Goa yet, you are missing out on having an amazing time. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and head there for your next vacay or a long weekend!!

I’ve always only heard about partying in Goa, but it’s cool to hear that there’s other stuff going on (and quieter beaches). I never would’ve thought about the area having a lot of churches either. I will definitely check out St. Anthony’s when I go!
